1Warm-up and Circle Talk10 min+–
Purpose. Help students practice saying a feeling out loud before they have to work as a team.
STEPS
Seat students in a circle so everyone is facing each other.
Going around the circle, each student names their feeling right now in one word.
Ask four or five volunteers to say why they feel that way.
Explain that today is about working together and solving problems kindly.

2Introduction to Conflict and Human Rights5 min+–
Purpose. Introduce conflict and human rights in words a five year old can hold onto.
STEPS
Place students in groups of 3 to 4.
Each group picks a spokesperson.
Give two minutes per question.
Walk the room and guide the groups as they talk.
Take one spokesperson per group after each question.

1. Have you ever disagreed with a friend? Share with your group what happened and why.
It’s okay to have different ideas and thoughts from a friend. Sometimes we may not agree with what our friend thinks, but it’s important to show respect and work together to find a solution that makes everyone happy. When we solve problems together in a kind and fair way, it’s called resolving conflict.
2. What does it mean to be treated fairly?
When we treat others fairly in a disagreement, we are showing them respect. That means listening when they are sharing, waiting our turn to talk, and being kind with our words.
3. What are the rights that everyone has?
Every person has rights. These rights are a set of rules that make us feel safe and respected. Like the right to play outside safely, or to be able to speak.

STEPS
Keep the same groups of 3 to 4.
Show one picture at a time.
Give one minute for the group to say what they see and what it means.
Take a spokesperson from each group.
Name the three ideas together: respect, fairness, nonviolence.

Purpose. Close the lesson by having each student thank a teammate for something they actually did today.
STEPS
Hand out the thank-you card template, one per student.
Students cut along the dotted line and fold the paper in half.
They write a teammate’s name on the front and decorate it.
They write the note inside.
Each student hands the card to that teammate.
